With the NFL trade deadline coming up at 4:00 pm EST on October 30th Youth Braden Smith Jersey , there will be a lot of rumors. Goodness, there already have been a lot of rumors. However, it may be a lot harder than you think to make a deal.First thing one needs to understand is trades are not made in a vacuum. For example, there’s been a recent uproar from New York Giants fans for the team to trade for Indianapolis Colts back-up QB Jacoby Brissett. In a vacuum, Brissett is worth at most a second or third round pick. However, we don’t live in a vacuum. It would be highly unlikely the Colts would trade Brissett for only a second or third round pick. You must consider other factors in determining a player’s trade value, things like positional scarcity, current contract and other available options at the position. A quality QB is arguably the most difficult position to fill in the NFL, which increases Brissett’s value. If it were for a lesser valued position, like RB, the value would decrease. A team also needs to consider the current contract of the player. If the player is looking for a huge contract extension, it may weaken the team’s bargaining position. If the player has multiple years left on a rookie deal, that may strengthen their position. One of the other considerations is other available options at the position. Most teams will consider what the current and future free agent market will look like as well as the upcoming NFL draft. Again looking at the QB position, the trade market for QBs last season wasn’t particularly great for teams looking to trade away a QB. The 2018 NFL draft had several high quality options and most guessed Kirk Cousins would become an unrestricted free agent. Teams had little to no incentive to trade high draft capital mid-season to get a QB when there were likely to be quite a few high quality options available after the season. Now compare last year to this year and you get a completely different story. The top QBs in free agency are likely to be Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater and Nick Foles. It’s unlikely Bridgewater leaves the Saints so the free agent class is underwhelming. The 2019 draft class at QB may be worse. There isn’t a sure-fire top QB prospect who has risen above the rest to this point to be a lock as a top 10 or even top 15 pick. The names we hear most often are Oregon’s Justin Herbert, Missouri’s Drew Lock and NC State’s Ryan Finley but each has significant limitations. Last year, at least Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen were considered top 10 picks http://www.authenticsindianapoliscolts.com/cheap-jabaal-sheard-jersey , with Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield picking up steam. The lack of obvious top quality options in the 2019 NFL draft increases the value of a player like Brissett. These same reasons are likely why the New England Patriots only got a second round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo last year from the San Francisco 49ers. The market simply didn’t develop. The 49ers had a lot of options if they were willing to wait and Jimmy G was going to be an unrestricted free agent. That left New England without a lot of options. Either let Jimmy G walk and receive a 2019 third round compensatory pick or trade him for a little higher pick in 2018. The Patriots made the right call there.Another aspect to consider when trying to make a trade mid-season is the difficulty in getting a player acclimated to your team in time to make a difference. The Colts know this first hand when the traded for Brissett last year. Unless the systems are similar, it takes time for the player to make an impact. But remember this is not just about a player fitting in a new system but also fitting within the culture of the locker room. A general manager can’t bring in a player that is a perceived trouble maker into the locker room. It’s very important to keep a strong culture, especially with a young team like the Colts. Thankfully, Frank Reich could likely handle any personality that comes in but sometimes the risk is not worth the reward.Arguably the most important thing to consider is the cost evaluation of trading away a player for a draft pick. Is it more valuable to your team to have this player in the locker room as an emergency or is it more valuable to have the extra draft pick? That’s a personal preference of the GM regarding franchise construction. If the team is clearly rebuilding, maybe the GM goes for the draft picks instead of hanging on to the player. Yes, there are some great players that might be rumored to be available. However, there’s a reason they are available and their current team wants to trade them. It may be as simple as a new coaching regime came in and the player just doesn’t fit the new scheme, like what appears to be happening with the Arizona Cardinals. It may be the team has an abundance of talent at a given position so they can afford to make a move. It also may be the player has worn out their welcome and the team no longer wants them in their locker room, like it appears is happening in Pittsburgh. All of these are possibilities as to why a team may be looking to trade a player. All of these things must be considered.Making a mid-season trade is not as simple as ‘I’ll give you this player for that draft pick.’ There’s a lot of variables to consider that go into determining a player’s value in the current market. You have to know the market and what’s available. You have to know how desperate a team may be for a particular player or how likely they are to make a deal. For example, some GMs value draft picks above most everything else, like it appears Chris Ballard does. Some teams value players above draft picks, like the Los Angeles Rams. Needless to say, there are many things to consider when trying to work out a mid-season trade. It’s not as easy as it looks. In fact, mid-season trades are quite hard to do.Colts vs Seahawks: Breaking down Nyheim Hines’ rough first game Nyheim Hines had a bad debut. There isn’t any other way to say it. He struggled mightily in the return game and didn’t redeem himself on the ground. It is fair to say that some of his use was pared down as he will be involved in a handful of gadget type plays every game. However, as a runner and return man, he needs to dramatically improve. We are going to dig in to his film and see what his game looks like under a microscope. On Hines’ first returnable punt he gets stopped and lets the ball get stripped out. The Colts lucked out because they said that the whistle had been blown for forward progress. It certainly looked like a fumble to me, and I think more often than not this is called a turnover and a huge blow. Hines is a smaller guy White Joe Haeg Jersey , and sometimes that can be a struggle. Hines will have to make sure he fixes that problem or he won’t be getting return responsibilities for long. Here we see Hines get the handoff on second and long. At first glance it could appear that bad blocking is what resulted in this run going for just 3 yards. However, a closer look shows that Hines just plain goes to the wrong hole. There is a great hole opened up on the right side and given Hines electric speed, this should be something like a 5-6 yard gain at minimum. Instead, he runs directly into the scrum where there is little chance of any actual progress. What is Hines doing here? If you saw me do this on the field it would be understandable, but this is a really bad look for an NFL running back. He could do one of two things that would be acceptable here. He could block the defender and help out Austin Howard, or he could step inside Howard and released into the flat for a quick pass. Either of those things would have been more helpful than what he chose to do, which was to get in Howard’s way, turn around backwards, and fall down uselessly. This was not a fun play to watch in the film room with Tom Rathman, I am certain. Here we get a toss to Hines for an outside run. It isn’t a bad play, and results in a five-yard gain. However, given his speed, you would like to see him be able to make the cutback and take advantage of the big running lane to the inside that is opened up and if he does this might be a first down and more. This isn’t exactly an error on his part, but it certainly means he left some yards on the field here.On this play it is tough to fault Hines for coming up short of the line of scrimmage. There is really no hole to run through at all. The call clearly has him going up the middle, and you don’t want your running backs to be too quick to bounce outside. The opportunity would have been there for him to at least gain a few yards by racing the linebacker to the sideline, but it isn’t really his fault that the line didn’t win their matchups. This one falls more on poor blocking than on his running. It is pretty clear to anyone watching that Hines isn’t the guy they’re using to gash teams up the middle anyway.Well, up until now I’ve been pretty tough on Hines White Chester Rogers Jersey , but here is an example of him getting it right. It is 3rd and 7 in the red zone. There aren’t many more critical situations. Phillip Walker drops back and Hines steps up to put a hit on a linebacker who comes screaming up the middle. Now the chances are that Walker gets this pass off anyway, but this block is the difference between taking a big hit after the throw or not. This is exactly what you want from your running back on this kind of play. This is Hines second big mistake. At the last second, he decides he cannot make the catch, but doesn’t get out of the way and it bounces off him. Thankfully Hines is saved again by a heads-up play by Ronald Martin. If the defense recovers this it is a huge swing and they have the ball in great position to score. This kind of momentum changing play is the last thing the Colts can afford in the regular season. Another punt, another mistake. Hines misjudges the distance of the kick here and finds himself too far forward. He can’t bring the ball in, and only just gets it in hand before the gunner slams into him. If you want to give Hines points for the sheer luck of avoiding 3 turnovers up to this point, I guess you could, but this kind of mistake and narrow miss is one that will lose him the return job if it keeps happening throughout the preseason. All in all, this was not a good outing for Nyheim Hines at all. He made several critical mistakes that were lucky not to be turnovers. He struggled in pass protection, and he missed some running lanes when asked to carry the ball. In a wide open running back competition, he did not win himself any points with his performance. Fortunately, this was just the first preseason game and he has 3 more to make an impression. The rest of Hines’ time in camp has not looked as rough as this game did, so it is entirely possible that nerves played a major role in his struggles. If that is true, we will hopefully see a totally different player in week two of the preseason. With some injuries to the running backs, he will certainly get the chance to make a better second impression. If he continues to struggle, it could seriously limit how much he is used once the regular season gets under way.
