People always like to joke that those who are hugely obsessed with comic superheroes are nerdy, dorky boys most likely laden with social phobias.


The idea that "nerd culture" can even be seen in Ricky Gervais' new film The Special Correspondent. The film has a scene where Gervais' wife cheats on him with a guy who supposedly doesn't know she is married. However, it is later revealed he figured out she was married because he saw a lot of Avenger action figures together on a shelf.


His reasoning? - That's not something a woman would do.


The moment I heard that line, I felt a bit strange. I turned to look at the two posters for Captain America: Civil War hanging on my wall and then glanced at the Superman T-shirt I was wearing, as my thoughts turned to my Iron Man action figure collection I said to myself… "Uh… That's not true! What about me?"


As an grownup and out-going woman, I love superheroes. The Avengers and Deadpool from Marvel are my favorites, followed by DC's Batman.


I'm not some anomaly either. The number of female fans of superheroes is growing, as is the number of superhero fans of both sexes in China.


Women want to be heroes


"Superhero is not a label for nerd or loser. The reason we love superheroes is not just some power fantasy. We love how human they are even though they've become superhuman," a Chinese girl who goes by the English name Liz told the Global Times.


"We are attracted to the excellent plots, deep world-building and the psychological struggles of the characters. Like no matter how wealthy Batman is, he will always be haunted by nightmares of his parents being killed, while Superman really just wishes to blend in with human society."


Liz said modern women have plenty of reasons to love superheroes. Women nowadays are no longer stuck at home, they have achieved much in different professions despite their age or cultural backgrounds, which has made them able to be related to these characters.


"We are not just lusting after the perfect bodies of Superman and Captain America, we also admire their power, spirit, friendship and ideas of justice that they represent. Women also fantasize about becoming such a superhero. We also call for more female characters to join the ranks of superheroes!"


Zhang, a female fan of superheroes, the Star Wars franchise and Game of Thrones, told the Global Times that it's perfectly reasonable for a woman to fall in love with superheroes, especially when they're portrayed as guys who are muscular, powerful, rich and almost perfect.


"It's suspiciously homosexual for a guy to be obsessed with such guys," Zhang joked.


She pointed out that unlike the stereotype, she's the one who is into sci-fi and superhero books and films, while it's her husband who is the lover of South Korean soap operas.


"I'm quite successful!" Marvel fan Pam (pseudonym) told the Global Times when talking about the stereotype that only losers love superheroes.


An oversea returnee who now has a stable job with a State-owned company, Pam fell in love with Marvel when she watched Iron Man in university.


"I love superheroes. This love hasn't influenced my ability to accomplish things and my role in society," she said.


Super success in China


It's not just the number of female fans that is growing. The movie adaptations of comics have made new fans out of all different kinds of people.
