Saturday Dawg Chow: Browns news (8/11/18) Cleveland Browns:Hue Jackson encouraged
by first test with Tyrod Taylor (ohio.com) - Tyrod Taylor’s completions of 21 and 36 yards on consecutive plays in Thursday night’s preseason opener were obvious sources of optimism for the Browns Womens Larry Ogunjobi Jersey , but coach Hue Jackson left MetLife Stadium feeling just as good about the influence of his veteran quarterback.Accurate to say Baker Mayfield and Tyrod Taylor were on target (cleveland.com) - Buffalo’s Josh Allen threw one to the moon Thursday night. He just wasn’t aiming for the moon. The Bills rookie made his NFL debut in Buffalo in a preseason opener against Carolina at the same time Baker Mayfield was debuting for the Browns at the New York Giants. When the two face off next Friday when Buffalo visits for the preseason home opener in Cleveland, rest assured, Allen’s incompletions will dazzle.ReFocused: Browns vs. Giants (PFF) - Baker Mayfield was as advertised, making plays throughout the night. His first touchdown pass was threaded between defenders to David Njoku in the endzone. He showed his accuracy on a slant to Antonio Callaway in tight coverage which Callaway was able to take for Mayfield’s second touchdown of the game. Callaway was solid in his debut hauling in three catches for 87 yards and that touchdown. His lone score was an impressive catch in tight coverage and was able to make the free safety miss and take it 54 yards to the house.Browns hope David Njoku builds on big night (clevelandbrowns.com) - When the Browns drafted David Njoku, they envisioned the big, tall and ultra-athletic tight end to be a mismatch nightmare for years to come. He flashed that sky-high potential with a pair of big-time touchdown catches in Thursday’s 20-10 preseason win over the Giants. While Njoku, the 29th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, remains a work in progress entering his second season, it was a promising display following a rookie campaign of highs and lows.NFL:Redskins Derrius Guice suffers torn ACL, will miss season (Washington Post) - Derrius Guice assured those around him that he was okay, believing the knee injury that had curtailed his first taste of preseason action would be nothing more than a brief setback en route to a dominant first year in the NFL. But by Friday afternoon, the Washington Redskins and their dynamic rookie running back learned the sobering truth: Guice is done for the year.Seahawks rookie Shaquem Griffin shines with nine tackles in debut (ESPN) -Seattle Seahawks rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin got some simple advice from teammate Bobby Wagner before his first NFL game. ”Don’t worry about too much, just run fast Authentic Darren Fells Jersey , run to the ball and hit hard,” Griffin said. “That’s what they’ve been preaching to me all week, and that’s what I did.”What does Josh Allen’s debut mean for the Bills? (nyup.com) - It’s hard to remember sometimes that Josh Allen is only 22 years old. He’s carrying the weight of an entire franchise and city on his shoulders after becoming the highest-drafted quarterback in Buffalo Bills history. Allen learned a lot from his NFL debut Thursday night at New Era Field, but his biggest takeaway is how much he continues to love the game. The pros and cons of paying Khalil Mack (ESPN) - Khalil Mack’s training camp holdout reached 12 days on Tuesday, with no end in sight. Neither side is talking, not Mack’s agent, Joel Segal, nor Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, coach Jon Gruden or owner Mark Davis. Mack is scheduled to make $13.846 million this season after the Raiders exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. They could conceivably place franchise tags on him in 2019 and 2020 (the tag for defensive ends was $17.143 million this season), but Mack would have to actually, you know, show up, suit up and play.Three under-the-radar Browns to watch as camp continues Training camp is long Authentic Damarious Randall Jersey , and roster spots are going to be at a premium as new general manager John Dorsey has added a lot of talent to the Cleveland Browns roster. But the grind from 90 to 53 is just beginning, and anything can happen. No matter who you think is locked into a roster spot, there are always intriguing and hungry youngsters looking to make a name for themselves.Below we’ll take a look at three somewhat under-the-radar Browns who are trying to do just that.DB Denzel RiceDenzel Rice isn’t a rookie, so it’s not a shock that he’s turning some heads early in training camp. He played his college ball at Coastal Carolina and has spent time in Philadelphia and Houston since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He spent time last season on Indianapolis’ practice squad before signing with the Browns on Jan. 31.Second-year defensive back Jabrill Peppers noted Rice has been impressing people in the crowded but competitive cornerback room.Rice has had multiple interceptions in camp to this point, and has generally been blanketing receivers while he’s on the field. Here he is undercutting C.J. Board’s route for one interception (0:17 mark):He also had another pick in front of Jarvis Landry (pictured above).Rice impressed with ball skills in preseason action for the Texans last season before falling victim to final roster cuts and ultimately joining the Colts’ practice squad.TE Julian AllenRookie tight end Julian Allen has been seeing a lot of action with the second-team offense as Seth DeValve continues to be sidelined with a thigh injury. There was some chatter at camp asking who No. 86 was while watching from the sidelines.Allen finished his Southern Miss college career with 22 receptions, 298 yards, and one touchdown in 15 games after transferring from Lackawanna College in 2014. He oddly played in just four games in 2017, and had only three receptions for 17 yards after a breakout 2016 season—Southern Miss tight ends had only 10 total receptions last season. The tight end position falling out of favor at Southern Miss led to Allen’s slide down draft boards, which is understandable. But Allen is still the same player who was nominated to the John Mackey Award watch list entering last season. He has been touted as an all-around tight end with plus athletic traits, and he flashed some of that talent already at camp. Baker Mayfield connected with him for a touchdown on the second-team’s first goal-line offense simulation play on Monday. If you’ve watched the Browns at all recently, then you know finishing drives in the end zone has been problematic. Allen is one guy to watch closely as training camp progresses, and he should definitely be in the conversation for a practice squad position.WR Derrick WilliesWillies impressed instantly with his big 6’4” frame. The former Texas Tech Red Raider was lining up opposite rookie Damion Ratley with the second-team offense on Day 5, and he definitely looked the part. Now Womens Denzel Ward Jersey , those reps will probably go elsewhere if and when Josh Gordon returns, but Willies has the opportunity make an impression in the meantime. With Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Corey Coleman, Antonio Callaway, and special-teamer Jeff Janis probably penciled in for roster spots, Willies has an uphill climb to make the opening day 53-man roster. Veteran Rashard Higgins, sixth-rounder Damion Ratley, and undrafted rookie C.J. Board are also in the mix for that spot, should the Browns carry six receivers.Willies finished his career at Tech with 36 receptions, 592 yards and six scores, with a 16-plus yards-per-catch average. He transferred from Iowa following his freshman season where he compiled just four receptions for 72 yards and one score.
