The echo has no internal battery, so must be plugged in to work. ... Yes the echo has to be plugged in to work and there is no rechargeable battery. The Amazon Tap is a portable device for on the go that also uses Alexa but requires a Bluetooth or Hotspot connection when you are out and about.
