"This is a project that will irrigate lands and light up homes.The dam is a generator of optimism and belief in the future ofAfghanistan，" Modi added.


The Indian prime minister said that India supports Afghangovernment's efforts to promote peace， stability and development inthe country and will deepen cooperation with Afghanistan in variousfields.


President Ghani expressed gratitude for India's assistance tothe country's reconstruction efforts.


The reconstruction of Salam Dam was first initiated in 1970s butthe prolonged conflicts in the country have deterred efforts tocomplete the project. In 2006， India committed to funding thecompletion of the project.
