TRIPOLI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Libyan couple were killed onFriday when a shell hit their car as they were fleeing from theheavy fighting in Libya's western city of Sabratha, a militaryspokesman said.


"A heavy shell hit a family in a car near the entrance of thecity as they tried to leave because of the violent fighting. A manand his wife were killed, and their three children wounded," SalehBogrese'a, spokesman of Sabratha's anti-Islamic State (IS)operation chamber, told Xinhua.


Clashes were still going on despite calls for a cease-fire,Bogrese'a noted.


Sabratha, located some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, haswitnessed violent clashes between rival armed groups since Sundaymorning, which have caused dozens of casualties and forced manyresidents to flee their homes.


The clashes broke out after a member of the armed groupsaffiliated with the city's military council was killed by theanti-IS operation chamber.


UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday called for animmediate cease-fire in Sabratha.


"UNSMIL are deeply concerned about clashes in Sabratha andcivilian casualties, and calls on all parties to immediately ceasehostilities and ensure the protection of civilians in accordancewith international humanitarian law," the mission said in astatement.


Sabratha's anti-IS operation chamber was formed in 2016, and isallied with the Tripoli-based UN-backed government of nationalaccord.


The armed groups affiliated with the city's military councilaccused the chamber of being loyal to the rival eastern-basedLibyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar. Enditem
