LONDON adidas yeezy boost 350 v2 norge , July 31 (Xinhua) -- Marine biologists in London started an annual survey on Monday of the Thames Estuary to count the number of seals living in Britain's most famous waterway.
Experts from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) will scour the estuary for seals as part of a new action plan to protect the Thames' iconic marine mammals.
In the 1950s, seals were almost extinct from the Thames, but a clean-up drive has seen their numbers steadily grow.
It is now even possible for tourists crossing London's famous bridges to spot a seal heading along the Thames in search of food.
One seal, named Sammy, has even become a marine celebrity as he pays regular visits to Billingsgate Fish Market near Canary Wharf http://www.yeezyv2norge.com/ , enjoying fish thrown to him by porters in the market.
Experts see the seal colonies along the estuary and in the river as a clear sign the Thames has become cleaner.
The biologists from ZSL, the international conservation charity, will be checking the shorelines and sandbanks along the Thames to carry out their latest population counts for harbor seals and grey seals.
"As well as monitoring seal numbers, ZSL's conservationists will be looking for evidence of how other factors including health threats, coastal development and inter-species behaviors are affecting these marine mammal populations adidas yeezy norge ," said a ZSL spokesman.
ZSL's estuaries and wetlands conservation manager Anna Cucknell said: "Last year's survey estimated populations of 964 harbour seals and 1,552 grey seals across the estuary, so it will be interesting to see how these numbers have changed."
The animal faces serious conservation threats, she said, from health threats like phocine distemper virus yeezy boost 350 norge , which devastated UK seal populations in 2002; to threats from construction and dredging projects; to inter-species competition for food and territory.
Steered by ZSL in collaboration with the Port of London Authority (PLA), RSPCA, Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP), British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and Tideway, the new protection plan will also encompass input from emergency services experts at the Metropolitan Police Service yeezy boost 350 v2 norge , London Fire Brigade and Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
As part of the action plan, members of the public will be able to access advice online on how to know if a marine mammal is healthy or in need of help and what to do.
Following this year's annual seal census, ZSL's team will also be conducting their first-ever harbor seal breeding survey of the Thames in 2018, increasing the accuracy of population estimates and shedding further light on the importance of this critical pupping habitat for the species.

RIGA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Liepaja has big growth potential, Latvian President Andris Berzins said as he opened an international business forum in this port city in south-western Latvia on Thursday, Baltic News Service reported.
The president indicated that the new Latvian government had successfully started work on the 2015 budget, as well as expressed confidence that Latvia would never again allow anything that would have a clearly negative impact on its national interests.
"Continuity and experience give us grounds to hope that the highly complicated budget issue will be successfully dealt with and that the other issues of importance to Latvia will also be solved sensibly and successfully... I am also sure that the approach and attitude to everything that is going on in the European Union (EU) will radically change and Latvia will not allow anything that might have a clearly negative effect on its national interests. That time is over," President Berzins said.
