In games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Next-Gen, and Sonic Unleashed, you essentially have the ability to walk around the town, complete little side-quests, and actually explore the area before going into a major level. In these places, you can possibly find special power-ups, upgrades, and so on. In games like Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Colors, you essentially go from stage-to-stage, to which the game actually focuses on completing the stages. Basically, this is what I'm getting at. There are two types of games that I'm talking about. The first group is the group where you can do certain things between levels (the Zelda series is an example). The second group is the group where you can advance through the game in a straightforward way (Super Meat Boy, Super Mario Bros., and Sonic 3 and Knuckles are also answers of this). Which group do you prefer?
