I took my first self-pace course at Columbia when I was a psychology major, about 1965. BF Skinner had written a book that contained the lectures and quizzes, plus guidance for discussions, and the major tests, during class time.
Later I took courses in law from the University of London, and the basic training for new hires at Merrill, Lynch. These were also completely self pace.
I learned the material in one third the time it took for lectures, and didn’t have to take notes, and remembered perhaps three times as much. So this seemed ten times as efficient as lectures.
Therefore I believe the best education thesis topic must be to measure how long it takes to learn material from conventional methods versus self pace material, and how much is retained say six months later.
