Smith enters his third season as a member of the Senators hockey department after initially being named to the position of scouting and development consultant in September of 2012. Smith joins Paul MacLeans staff with his primary responsibility of coaching the teams defencemen. Smith, who retired as a player following the 2008-09 campaign as a member of the Senators, had a 16-year National Hockey League career as a defenceman, spanning 1,008 career games with the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and the Senators, recording 169 points (41 goals, 128 assists) and 1,099 penalty minutes. He will join current assistant coaches Dave Cameron and Mark Reeds, as well as goaltending coach Rick Wamsley, video coach Tim Pattyson and conditioning coach Chris Schwarz on the Senators coaching staff. The Senators also named former Senators forward Shean Donovan as their new player development consultant. Donovan will work alongside assistant general manager Randy Lee in overseeing the progress of prospects throughout the Senators system. He will also serve in an advisory capacity to members of the Ottawa, Binghamton Senators and Evansville IceMen coaching staffs.
