Let’s face it, we all love leather products and love carrying them around whether it is a handbag, a wallet, belts, or even leather jackets. Leather is a classy and elegant material whose products we use quite frequently in our day-to-day lives. But since there are so many companies that produce leather products, it is often a problem figuring out whether the product we just bought is of genuine leather or is synthetic. There are some ways you can distinguish genuine pure leather from a fake synthetic one. 1. Check for tags claiming whether the product is made from genuine leather or is ‘manmade’ or synthetic leather. 2. Drop some water on your leather product to see if it absorbs it or if the water puddles up on top. Real leather would always absorb water within a few seconds. 3. If you’ve bought a leather jacket, one way to check if it’s synthetic or not is to check the edges. If your jacket has rough, uneven or frayed edges, then you just got your hands on a genuine leather jacket! 4. Check the texture of the surface of the product. If it has grain or contains pores or any sort of imperfections like wrinkles and creases, know that it is genuine leather. 5. Another way of testing leather – and it is also dangerous – is to test it under a small flame. Bring your leather product close to the flame for 5-10 seconds, and see if it chars up or catches the flame. If it is genuine leather, it would burn slightly and wouldn’t give off a burnt odor. If it is synthetic, it would more likely catch fire and would smell like burnt plastic. But make sure to keep all safety measures before doing this experiment as it could lead to dangerous circumstances.
