Money management might not seem to belong on that list.Yet experts say it should be a high priority -- even for players just entering the league.No one is suggesting the fans who spend their hard-earned wages to support pro football should sympathize with guys who might waste the big bucks on bad investments or unwise spending. But they should recognize that millions upon millions of dollars can bring dozens upon dozens of problems for NFL players.We all have different vices, said former NFL linebacker Bart Scott, whos helping Morgan Stanley Global Sports & Entertainments financial education program for football players. Some have entourages, friends, family they support, or they overextend themselves buying a house too early, or the career is not going the way you need it to, or you have child support.Ive seen guys lose money in a multitude of ways, so were trying to give them more information, provide checks and balances.Players can get money management guidance from programs like Morgan Stanley GSE, as well as through the NFL and the players union. Its essential education, whether for a rookie making the six-figure minimum or the star earning eight figures a year.The union, for example has an online learning center where players can complete assessments to determine where they stand financially, and identify their key vulnerabilities. That site also provides them with additional information to help meet their financial goals and objectives.They also can get access to counselors, webinars and in-person seminars and workshops. The NFLPA provides bi-weekly communications to the players to keep them informed on hot topics.I think the biggest issue for players is the sudden wealth factor, said Dana Hammonds, senior director of player development for the union. Many players are coming from ethnic poverty and all of a sudden are thrust into this industry where they are paid millions of dollars and it literally happens overnight. There are very few individuals in society prepared to handle the sudden wealth. It is the emotional side they have to deal with, along with a quick and steep learning curve. And the career is 3 1/2 years on average, so a lot of that goes on very quickly.Which makes it ever more critical for players to immediately get a handle on their finances once they make a roster -- even before the big paydays might come.Patrick Kerney spent 11 seasons as an NFL defensive end, making the All-Pro team in 2007. Soon after he retired in 2009, Kerney went to work for the league in the player investments area.My big idea behind joining the league office was that they held offseason camps for broadcasting and other (subjects), he said, and we had lots of guys with interest in those things. But 100 percent of our players should have disposable income they should have to manage, so a financial boot camp had universal application. It was a no-brainer to get guys together in the offseason to dial back from all the noise and hear unbiased information and the real numbers in the investment world.Among Kerneys main concerns was getting quality unbiased info to them before too much damage is done by advisers who dont have the players best interests at heart.The biggest pitfall is correlating football achievement with investment know-how, Kerney added. If you are a young player and the All-Pro on your team is doing X, Y and Z with his assets, of course you think that is the right thing to do with your assets. But 99 percent of the time it is not.So getting them the right info, that is key.Kerney has left the NFL, but his boot camp creation remains a major offseason initiative to provide that info. So are the financial education sessions that are mandatory in the leagues rookie transition and rookie success programs.One of the organizations the NFL works with through its financial literacy program is Money Management International, a nonprofit full-service credit counseling agency. The players union provides advisers vetted by outside organizations who meet eligibility criteria set by the NFLPA.Morgan Stanley GSE takes its program a step further by offering services to potential NFL players as well as to the pros. It has delivered 34 collegiate programs and also works with the Senior Bowl and has conducted sessions for players with the Jaguars, Seahawks and Steelers.Rather than lecture the athletes, Morgan Stanleys approach is more conversational and interactive.We make sure the content is relevant for where they were, said Drew Hawkins, managing director and head of Morgan Stanley GSE. We hear from the athletes in terms of challenges they are dealing with and were able to incorporate what our consultants have experienced with these issues, and can really put this in a way to make it very relevant.Our financial education programs are not targeted or designed to develop new business for ourselves, but to better educate these individuals into the dos and donts of what they need to be thinking of. If we get around these athletes while theyre still in college, when they graduate they hopefully have a foundation to make the right decisions.When they build that foundation, its not only fulfilling for the players, but for those who have been advising them.I still get texts from guys who are still using the lessons learned years later, Kerney said. Ive been in a green pool only once before and it was really gross, but this wasnt too bad.But when they tried to change colour initially, they put a whole lot of chlorine in, which made everyones eyes sting. That was only for one day though and once they fixed it up it was fine and it went blue again.It didnt really put me off and luckily I didnt have to compete in it. Other divers actually had to do their comps in the green pool, but by the time I was competing it was blue again so it didnt really bother me. The conditions outside the pool would have had more of an effect on us, but the colour doesnt really have an impact, as we dont need to see under the water.I felt bad with the media back in Australia giving the athletes village such a bad rap, but it was really good. There were a lot of signs around when we first got there saying please dont flush your toilet paper, put it in the bin, because it clogged the toilet, but everyone was in the same boat. The showers were a bit cold when we first got there but they were hot at the pool, so we could just shower there. That was probably the main issue. By the time we got to Rio most of the issues had been sorted out in the apartments, so everything was running smoothly.I underperformedIts hard for me to pass judgement because Im on the Olympic team and its hard for me to comment too much on peoples performances or whether they underperformed, because personally for me when I reflect on my performance I definitely underperformed at Rio.Its difficult to pinpoint the reason why I didnt perform my best, its not that I have an excuse for my performance, you just go in and theres a lot of pressure and in the moment anything can happen; its really difficult at that level - under that stress and pressure - to be able to produce your very best. Diving is an incredibly mental sport when it comes to competition and it often comes down to who is the most mentally tough on the day.I know that everyone on the Australian team would have tried their best. Sometimes people can be harsh on athletes and are upset when they underperform. I can understand criticism when theres bad behaviour involved, which some people may have been a part of, but Im sure every single athlete did their best to put in a good performance.Maybe the expectations were too much?Maybe the high expectations that athletes have of themselves or from family, frieends, coaches and Australians in general may have affected some athletes. It definitely depends on the athletes and how they react to that sort of pressure.I know before an event I dont focus on medals because that undoes my whole performance, so I see a sports psychologist specifically to work on a mental process that I go through every competition. It involves staying 100% in that moment, not getting too ahead of myself, not dwelling on whats already happened, not looking at scores; its actually really hard trying to block all those things out, so thats why I spend so much time working on it.My disappointment at RioOverall I was relatively happy with my performance. I had three solid rounds, I didnt have any big misses and I was sort of up in the mix, maybe not the medal mix, but up there with the top girls the whole way through. I was disappointed though, because I knew I could have dived better in the final, but most of all I dropped one of my best dives, which is my last dive. Im not sure if it would have brought me up to fourth, but I would have liked to finish with a really good last dive at least. Overall it wasnt too bad, but I was definitely disappointed with my performance.It wasnt really surprising who made it into the top group, but its common for a lot of us to swap around positions, so you probably couldnt pick who was going to place where, apart from maybe first and second, but everyone else has been competitive throughout the year and you couldnt really pick where wed all finish.What I hope to see in Australias diving futureIll definitely be sticking around for a bit, but Im not sure how much longer Ive got left. Id like to keep improving though and I think there is definitely a lot of room for improvement in my dives.The team that went to Rio was a bit of a mix, some were quite young while others had a bit more experience, but hopefully everyone who went to Rio will keep going. Even the ones that have been around for a bit longer I think are starting to find their footing and its a bit of a turning point for them as they really start to reach their peak within diving. So if they can keep going and continue to back up their results and improve, itll really bolster our Australian team.Weve got World Championships next year and then Commonwealth Games the year after, so there are some really big opportunities to improve and cement yourself. For some of the younger athletes, like Brittany OBrien, its a chance to start putting pressure on some of the older divers. Brittany competed as the reserve in Rio and I think that was a really good stepping stone for her to hit the next level, so I think if we can get more divers at that top level it would really help our Australian team.
