Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey Cizikas goal with 6:27 remaining spoiled an emotional night for the Ottawa Senators while lifting the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory. The Senators honored franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson, who signed a one-day contract with the team on Thursday to officially announce his retirement, prior to the games start. However, Ottawa mustered just 21 shots and Mika Zibanejads power-play goal to extend their losing streak to four games. It was fun to be a part of and I think it was well done, Senators captain Erik Karlsson said of the ceremony. That was the positive of the day, obviously, we didnt win the game. Brock Nelson added a goal in the red-hot Islanders eighth win in their last nine outings, while Jaroslav Halak posted 20 saves to set a team record with his 11th consecutive win between the pipes. Craig Anderson stopped 23 shots for Ottawa, which was coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to New York in Long Island in Tuesdays opener of this home-and- home set. Despite its low offensive output, Ottawa played the Islanders even until Cizikas broke the 1-1 stalemate in the 54th minute. Thomas Hickey set up the game-winner with a centering pass that hit off a Senators defender and went straight to an uncovered Cizikas, who ripped a shot from the right circle past Anderson. It was huge, Cizikas said. (Hickey) found me backdoor with a nice pass and I was able to get it off quick enough. Might not have been the hardest shot, but it went in. Halak made the lead hold up by making four of his 12 third-period saves in the final six minutes. After neither team generated much offensively during an uneventful opening period, the Islanders struck on a power play with 8:15 left in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Frans Nielsens pass into the crease hit the skate of Ottawas Cody Ceci and was promptly jammed in by Nelson for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Penalties by Nelson and Brian Strait 43 seconds apart allowed the Senators to pull even with about five minutes left in the second, however. Zibanejad converted the 5-on-3 chance with a well-placed one-timer from the left circle off an Erik Karlsson give. Game Notes Alfredsson spent his first 17 NHL seasons with Ottawa before a one-year stint with Detroit in 2013-14, and is the Senators all-time leader in goals (426), points (1,108) and games played (1,178) ... Halak had held the Islanders record for consecutive wins by a goalie with Billy Smith (1982) ... New Yorks Michael Grabner (hernia surgery) and Ottawa defenseman Marc Methot (back) both made their season debuts ... Senators forward Bobby Ryan returned from a two- game absence caused by a broken finger ... Defenseman Travis Hamonic (upper body) and forward Cal Clutterbuck (lower body) both sat out for the Islanders after sustaining injuries in Tuesdays matchup. Air Max 270 Fake Kaufen . But with only a 10-point lead over 12th place Minnesota in the tightly packed Western Conference, the Sharks know they have their work cut out for them down the stretch of the season. Were in a dogfight, coach Todd McLellan said. Thats the best way of putting it. My time here with the group weve been comfortably in the playoff picture. There have been a couple other years where we had to battle and were in the middle of one of those battles or dogfights.San Jose has made the playoffs for 10 straight seasons — the second-longest active streak in the NHL. But after becoming just the fourth NHL team to lose a best-of-seven series after winning the first three games in the first round last year against Los Angeles, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson talked about the need to take a step back before taking two steps forward. The team made few off-season additions, choosing instead to give more opportunities to young players. Rookies like Melker Karlsson and Barclay Goodrow have made contributions this season and young veterans like Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic have taken on added responsibility. But more work is needed if the Sharks are going to reach the level of the top teams in the Western Conference. Were in a playoff spot right now, so positive, Couture said about his outlook on the team. I ddont know if weve played our best hockey yet.dddddddddddd. Were still improving, which is also positive. We realize we have a tough road ahead to get to the playoffs.Consistency has been a major problem for the Sharks, who have seven losses against the bottom six teams in the league but are 6-0-2 against the four first-place teams. Were a middle-of-the-pack team right now, McLellan said. Until we declare ourselves any different and thats through play and wins, thats what we are. We have to take steps forward to overcome that. The Sharks will begin the post-break stretch on Thursday night against Anaheim without two key players. Defenceman Justin Braun and forward Tommy Wingels both broke bones in their left hands on Jan. 19 against New Jersey. Braun got hurt blocking a shot from Mike Cammalleri and Wingels was injured on a slash by Cammalleri later in the game. Both players are expected to miss a few more weeks but would like to be back in time to play the outdoor game at Levis Stadium on Feb. 21 against Los Angeles. Whether that is possible remains to be seen. The Sharks managed to win their first game without those two key players last Wednesday when they beat Los Angeles 4-2.Tommy and Brauny are big parts of our team, Goodrow said. Tommy can really play anywhere in our lineup — special teams, PK, PP. Hes a key guy on our team and with him out, guys like myself are going to need to step up and bring a little more to the table. The Sharks do expect to get rookie defenceman Mueller back.
