File photo: Internet Over 20 million Chinese Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan on Wednesday as the government ramps up efforts to help Muslim workers better adapt to urban life.

Some provisions in the old draft already include giving preferential treatment to ethnic students in terms of funds and faculty allocation, and government support for enterprises engaged in producing, processing and selling products that are made for ethnic minorities through subsidized loans and tax reduction.
In some of the eastern cities, local governments arrange ethnic minority migrant workers to come and find jobs in local factories.
In Putian, Fujian Province, children of Hui-ethnic migrant workers can enjoy free education. The local government has also arranged for the establishment of halal cafeterias and given them discounts on medical fees, the Xinhua News Agency reported in the past.
Prayers for Eid
Amid the generally joyous celebrations among China's Muslim community for Eid al-Fitr, however, some Chinese netizens have hit a sour note after seeing pictures of people praying on a blocked off street in Shanghai.
Outside Huxi Mosque in Pudong district in Shanghai, Chinese Muslims wearing white skullcaps and gowns were seen kneeling on the street praying on Wednesday, with police blocking each end of the road so their service would not be interrupted.
The photo went viral on Sina Weibo, with some local residents expressing shock at seeing so many Chinese Muslims in a modern and secular metropolis such as Shanghai. Others felt their secular life was "violated" in some way and questioned why they were allowed to carry out religious activities on a public street instead of inside the mosque.
But during big celebrations, it is not uncommon that worshippers have to spill out on the streets. Huxi is the biggest mosque in Shanghai, but still can only accommodate 1,000 people.
A staff member from the mosque told the Global Times some 5,000 Chinese Muslims come together to celebrate the festival.
"Each year we have more Muslims attending the festival than the mosque can hold. We are a big Muslim family here," he said.
There are more than 200,000 Muslims living in Shanghai out of a population of some 20 million. There are around 21 million Chinese Muslims.
The reaction from netizens is just one of the recent examples of Han people's growing anxiety over the Muslim group, fueled by fears of terror attacks both domestic and overseas with the rise of global terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (IS).
"The IS has been committing terrorist attacks under the banner of Islam, which has damaged the image of Muslims to some extent," Li Lin, an Islamic Studies expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Thursday.
China has 56 officially recognized ethnic groups, with Han people making up 91.46 percent of the population.
Ibrahim Ma Xiaozhi, a Muslim scholar from Northwest China's Gansu Province, said he feels rather sad for some people's hostility toward Muslims.
"There are misunderstandings. Many of them don't even know much about Islam," Ibrahim told the Global Times, adding that Chinese Muslims are broadly patriotic and anti-separatist.
In April at a national religious meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that there must be adherence "to the leadership of the Party" when handling religious affairs.
GAZA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior UN official on Monday expressed concerns over the isolation of the Gaza Strip, saying that the costal enclave is more isolated these days than any time else.
Roper Serry, the UN special coordinator to the peace process in the Middle East, said in a statement that he is more concerned that basic crucial humanitarian issues remained unresolved in the Gaza Strip.
Serry, who had a visit in Gaza for two days, said many Israeli restrictions on the commercial and individuals movement at crossing points controlled by Israel are still unchanged.
"The closure of Rafah border crossing point between Gaza and Egypt is still closed," the UN official said, adding that the UN has been calling on all parties to put an end to the ongoing closure of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, he stressed that achieving settlement in Gaza and helping its economy to grow up "needs permanent ceasefire and a legal unity to recognize the Palestinian government that carries out its mission and perform properly."
He also called on all factions and political powers to be committed to the unity government, which was formed last June after an agreement reached between the Hamas movement and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party.
Serry also called on the unity government and the Palestinian factions as well as Israel, Egypt, the international community and the donor countries to change their policies toward the Gaza Strip and consider the enclave a priority for them.
