ATHENS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Greece and Europe are exiting the economic crisis, setting the foundations for a better Europe, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Wednesday at an events marking start of Greece's EU Presidency.
"Greece, through immense difficulties, is leaving the crisis behind. Europe is leaving the crisis behind," Samaras stressed during a joint press conference with Barroso after a series of meetings between the Greek government and the visiting College of EU commissioners at Zappeion Exhibition Hall in central Athens ahead of the main festive event to be held in Athens later on Wednesday evening.
"Greece hopes to bring the European citizen closer to the EU. Therefore, the guiding principles of our policy during the first half of 2014 are dealing with problems which are vital for Europe's future; economic recovery, combating unemployment, the strengthening of social cohesion, the safeguarding of European security, both internal and external," Samaras said outlining the agenda and goals of the Greek EU Presidency.
Samaras added that over the next six months, Greece and its European counterparts will also seek to deepen the economic and monetary union.
He thanked Europe for its support towards Greece's efforts to address the debt crisis that has hit the country hard since 2009.
On his part, Barroso appeared confident that 2014 "will be a better year for Europe compared to the previous ones, on economic terms."
Referring to the Greek EU Presidency he said that Greece "is well prepared" and can count on the support of European counterparts.
"Greece is an experienced pilot," he said, since this is the fifth time the country is assuming the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union.
"We are in Athens today to celebrate the European presidency is a clear evidence that predictions that Greece would exit the euro were wrong. Euro's existential crisis is over. We are exiting the crisis," he said.
"We are on the right track .. Programs do work provided they are implemented with determination," Barroso said, referring to positive developments in Greece and other European countries.
GENEVA, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, warned Monday that disrespect for human rights could lead to "a colossus of violence and death."
"Human rights violations are like a signal, the sharp zig-zag lines of a seismograph flashing out warnings of a coming earthquake," said the official in an opening statement at the 31st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva's Palais des Nations.
In a damning speech, Al Hussein deplored the increasing departure from the body of institutions and laws encapsulated by the UN in favor of generalized indifference.
"More and more states appear to believe that the legal architecture of the international system is a menu from which they can pick and choose, trashing what appears to be inconvenient," he said.
In light of myriad crises affecting milliocomplex issues.
"Many leaders are pandering to a simplistic nationalism which mirrors the simplified and destructive 'us' versus 'them' mind-set of the extremists and fans a rising wind of prejudice and fear," he added.
The Jordanian warned that international humanitarian law, which provides extra protection to fighters, civilians, the sick and wounded, and people who have laid down their arms, was also being side-lined.
"In Syria, previous to the temporary cessation of hostilities which began last weekend, this has been the case for five long years," he reminded.
The 52-year-old further condemned similar wide-ranging disregard for human life in countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, South Sudan and Yemen.
