RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil midfielder Doriva has vowed to bring an attacking approach to Vasco da Gama after being unveiled as manager of the Rio de Janeiro outfit on Monday.


The one-time Middlesbrough midfielder replaces Joel Santana, who was sacked earlier this month despite guiding the club back to Brazil's top division.


"We all like attacking, enterprising football that brings results," Doriva told a press conference. "My aim is to continue the tradition for that style of football at Vasco."


Doriva began his managerial career this year with brief spells at Ituano and Atletico Paranaense.


He will take charge of his first training session after the end-of-season break on January 5.


Capped 14 times for Brazil, Doriva represented Middlesbrough 79 times from 2002 to 2006.


His playing career also included spells at Celta Vigo, Sampdoria and Blackpool.
