Daniel Jeremiah projects Odell Beckham Jr. to be the top receiver in the NFL
Fans of the New York Giants know that wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is good — really Authentic Odell Beckham Jr Jersey , really good. How good has been a matter of debate, but he is generally ranked among the top three or four wide receivers in the NFL, ranked among elite talents like Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, and A.J. Green. Daniel Jeremiah, former NFL scout and current talent evaluator for the NFL Network, has made the bold statement that Beckham will be the best receiver in the NFL in 2018. On his “Move The Sticks” podcast with Bucky Brooks, Jeremiah said that Beckham will finally surpass Julio Jones and Antonio Brown at the top of the receiver rankings. Jeremiah said,Move The Sticks: Ranking The Top Wide ReceiversFor his part, rookie running back Saquon Barkley — who is a pretty darn good receiver in his own right — agreed with Jeremiah. “That guy is very impressive,” Barkley said. “I would say he’s, in my opinion, the best wide receiver in the league and if not, one of the best players in the league.” Why would Jeremiah put Beckham in the rarified air of scoring 17 or more touchdowns — putting him in the company of players like Randy Moss Color Rush Jon Halapio Jersey , Jerry Rice, Sterling Sharpe, and Cris Carter? Part of it is his athelticism. Beckham’s rare combination of speed, agility, and explosiveness are well-known. Just look at his ability to turn a pedestrian 78-yard slant into a game-breaking play for evidence of that. There is also his mastery of the nuance of the receiver position that let him use those physical tools to devastating effect. That mastery of his craft is what sets Beckham apart, and sets him up for success in the eyes of Barkley. He said after practice Thursday, “He ran this curl and the way he set it up and it was on Slay, who’s a very, very good corner too and seeing those guys go at it all week was very impressive. The way he just sells his routes, his speed. Obviously he didn’t get to show what he was able to do after the catch, but we all know what he’s able to do after the catch.”Coming off of a season derailed by injury, Beckham is finally getting back to full health and full speed, and showing it against live competition. “Whenever it’s time to go, it’s time to go Color Rush Curtis Riley Jersey ,” Beckham said after practice Thursday. “I’m feeling pretty good, I’m feeling fast. It’s starting to come back to me, so I’m just very thankful to be where I’m at right now.” There’s also a level of talent surrounding Beckham which he has never enjoyed before. The first two years of his career, the Giants hoped to pair Beckham with Victor Cruz and Reuben Randle to form a “pick your poison” offense. Unfortunately, that never came to fruition, as first Beckham, then Cruz were injured, and Randle declined each of his four seasons with the Giants. Now, defenses will have to contend with not only Beckham, but match-up nightmares in Evan Engram as a hybrid tight end and Saquon Barkley — both of whom are elite athletes. Finally, there’s the Shurmur factor. In naming his biggest “snub” to Jeremiah’s top five list, Bucky Brooks picks Minnesota Vikings receiver Adam Thielen. The fact that Thielen played, and excelled in, Shurmur’s offense should be instructive. Looking at Thielen’s history Youth Odell Beckham Jr Jersey , he had all of 20 catches for 281 yards and 1 touchdown in his first 32 games. But once Norv Turner resigned as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator in 2016, Thielen, as well as Stefon Diggs, saw marked jumps in production and efficiency. Shurmur uses them interchangeably, moving them around the offensive formation and putting them in position to use their route running and abilities after the catch to generate big plays. It’s little wonder why Beckham tweeted his excitement after Shurmur was hired. So then, did Jeremiah go overboard predicting a “monster season” for Beckham? Skeptics might point to the plethora of receiving targets — Engram, Barkley, Sterling Shepard, even Cody Latimer and Wayne Gallaman — as potential drains on Beckham’s market share. And if he isn’t getting the ball as often, wouldn’t that decrease the likelihood of him making a big play? Well, it might just work out that even if he isn’t the sole focus of the offense (as under Ben McAdoo), the scheme and talent might let him make better use of the opportunities he does get. In previous years, the Giants’ offense was “Odell and a prayer”. But if Jeremiah is right, a more diverse offense Color Rush Patrick Omameh Jersey , with a more mature and experienced Beckham who is better able to focus the passion that gives him his edge, could just make for a monster season. The New York Giants are trying to crawl out of a 1-5 hole that has created more questions about the team than it has answered. With that in mind, let’s get to the Big Blue View mailbag for this week.Ed says: No, Teddy Bridgewater isn’t a “must-have” for the 2019 season. And right now I’m not saying Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert is a “must-have” either. The 2018 season is in Week 7. We have no idea what’s going to happen. We don’t know how Kyle Lauletta will perform if he gets an opportunity. Those things matter. That decision can’t be made now.I get the fascination with Bridgewater, especially since Pat Shurmur coached him in Minnesota last season, but Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury and hasn’t played a meaningful snap since 2015. No one really has a clue what kind of player he is at this point, or if he can hold up physically. When the offseason rolls around maybe Bridgewater emerges as a good option. Now? Way too early for that.Ed says: The Giants are projected right to have roughly $21 million under the 2019 cap, with only five teams having less. In my view, that number is pretty meaningless.First, we don’t know exactly what the cap will be. Second, we don’t know what moves the Giants will make. The big contracts they have to make decisions on belong to Janoris Jenkins, Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison. I would expect at least one of those guys to be cut, probably Jenkins. Designating Jackrabbit a post-June 1 cut would save the Giants $11.25 million against the cap and leave them with only $3.5 million in dead money.Gino Phillips asks: Do you think the quick move to IR for Latimer was a statement on Giants’ evaluation of his value or more a chance to look at guys like Davis more? I am not aware of how significant his injury was.Ed says: I think the move of Latimer to IR wasn’t any sort of quick hook for him or condemnation of his ability. He’s a useful player as a wide receiver, special teams gunner and kickoff returner. We don’t know the severity of his hamstring injury Color Rush Nate Solder Jersey , but at 1-5 what’s the point of carrying a guy on the roster for several weeks if he can’t play and the games would be meaningless by the time he got back? This is part of why you get a parade to IR on bad teams. It actually gives the Giants a chance to bring in a player like Corey Coleman for what amounts to a lengthy tryout, or give someone like Jawill Davis or Quadree Henderson, who is on the practice squad, an opportunity.Henry Mildener asks: Can Corey Coleman return kicks?Ed says: Well ... he did that some at Baylor, returning 26 kickoffs and three punts. The last time he did it with any regularity, though, was 2013. He has never been asked to do it in the NFL. So, he has done it — but it’s been a long time. Maybe the Giants take a look at him there, but I really don’t know if that’s the plan and I doubt it’s the primary reason he was signed.Ed says: Honestly, I can’t answer that question. Unlike BBV draft expert Chris Pflum I don’t study college prospects now. I’m immersed in the day-to-day of current season and won’t do that until the season is over. Besides, how do you answer that question when there are 10 games to play and there is no way to know where they will be selecting and who might be on the board? It’s just waaaaay too early.[E-mail Ed at bigblueview@gmail.com or via the Big Blue View Contact Page | Follow Big Blue View on Twitter | ‘Like’ Big Blue View on Facebook | Follow Big Blue View on Instagram]
