OSWIECIM Ryan Callahan Lightning Jersey , Poland, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The celebrations of the 70th anniversary of KL Auschwitz concentration camp liberation began in the Polish southern town of Oswiecim on Tuesday morning.


More than a hundred former prisoners and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski together placed flower wreaths under the Execution Wall in the the former camp.


Placing a wreath made of white and red carnations, symbolizing Polish national colors, was a first part of commemorative events in the 70th anniversary of the camp liberation, which is also an International Holocaust Memorial Day.


Former prisoners and other participants went through the main gate with "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work makes you free") writing above. Many wore characteristic cloths with white-blue stripes symbolizing the striped camp uniforms the prisoners were forced to wear.


The Execution Wall is located in the courtyard of Block No. 11 and since 1941 was a place where the SS-men performed execution by shooting thousands of prisoners, mostly of Polish origin. It is also the traditional place for paying tribute to the Auschwitz victims.


The main commemorative celebration events will take place in the afternoon by the main gate of Auschwitz II Birkenau, where the German Nazis carried out the mass extermination of Jews in the gas chambers.


More than 300 former prisoners as well as the representatives of 49 countries, including presidents, prime ministers and crowned heads will participate.


According to the Auschwitz Museum, among the invited guests, there are: French President Francois Hollande, German President Joachim Gauck and Ukrainian President Petro Proshenko, as well as a Russian delegation.


There will also be delegations from Israel, the United States and Vatican City. Moreover, many other countries supporting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation have sent their diplomatic representations.


KL Auschwitz concentration camp was founded in 1940 by the Germans mostly for the aim of imprisoning Polish captives. Since 1942 it became Europe's one of the biggest places of Jewish extermination, with more than 1.1 million people killed, also including Poles, Romanians, Soviet captives and others.


The camp was liberated on January 27, 1945 by the Red Army soldiers of the former Soviet Union, the date which eventually became the Holocaust Victims Memory Day.

LISBON， Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Portuguese authorities said their last goodbyes to deceased former president Mario Soares on Wednesday at a remembrance service held here at parliament.


Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva paid tribute to Soares for his lessons on freedom and democracy.


""This is what Mario Soares taught us， and that is why we owe him so much. From the bottom of my heart， thank you，"" said Santos Silva.


President of the Portuguese Parliament， Eduardo Rodrigues， said: ""If Portugal today is distinguished in Europe and in the world for its national cohesion， that is very much down to the contribution of Mario Saores. That feeling of loss is accompanied by eternal gratitude，"" he said.


He pointed to the ties that joined him to the former Socialist leader and expressed his condolences to the Soares family.


""If politics was Mario Soares' vocation， freedom was his cause，"" he said， adding that Soares had fought until the end to this aim.


""He made some mistakes for sure， but he always understood the democratic policies as a passionate activity， made of successes but also of defeats， based on clear choices and strong convictions.""


The president and parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party， Carlos Cesar， referred to Soares as a politician who had never failed his country.


The remembrance session， he pointed out， was a ""celebration of his life and his patriotic dedication to Portugal.""


Wednesday marked the last day of the three-day national mourning for Soares， who died at the age of 92 at the Red Cross Hospital in Lisbon on Saturday.


During the past two days， thousands of citizens and numerous national and international figures have paid their respects to the man.


The funeral took place on Tuesday at the Prazeres Ccbon and was attended by hundreds of people.
