A ground-up construction project built by Chandlee and Sons Construction Company has made the ‘top’ list on Zagat. The project is the Big Sky Buckhead bar and restaurant - a two-story Benson Mayowa Jersey , steel, wood, concrete and glass structure in north Atlanta. The list is "The 12 Hottest Rooftop Dining and Drinking Scenes Across the USA"!

Chandlee and Sons Construction completed the project in February with the soft opening held the night of February 21, 2014. (See the photo on the right) Big Sky Buckhead is located on Cains Hill Place in Buckhead, a premier shopping and dining neighborhood north of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The design of the structure makes it a perfect choice for the May 27th list as the second floor bar has multiple glass-paned, garage-type doors that rise into the ceiling opening the entire space to the great outdoors.

As denoted by the name, the design for Big Sky is the wide open ‘big sky’ spaces of the north western United States. The use of huge wood beams and steel girders is essential to the design. The second floor bar features a mural on one wall designed and painted by an Atlanta artist of a forested mountain scene. Handcrafted finishes constructed of stone, wood and tile are found throughout the bar. Take all of these elements and add the lifting glass doors and you achieve the larger-than-life outdoors experience located right in the middle of a very urban setting. It is a tribute to the design and construction of the structure that it made the list of "12" for it is the only ‘scene’ on the list with a roof overhead. Zagat also commented that bar fare is not the usual, expected offering. As written by their staff writer, "Chef Hector Santiago consulted on the menu, and his Latin-and-more-inspired bar food is a welcome change from the norm"

Construction was delayed by the January 2014 record snow storm (note the Chandlee and Sons team was very dedicated - but that’s another story). Yet this photo is proof that even in the dead of winter, this rustic design is still inviting. With the extensive use of glass lots of sunlight pours into the interior of the bar which is a must in the south to ward off cabin fever.

The bad weather hit at a crucial stage in the construction of the project. And another challenge was the amount of hand crafting required in the design because it was labor intensive and time consuming. Yet when Seth Chandlee, co-owner of Chandlee and Sons Construction, found out about the Zagat article, he had this to say, "Well, Well, Well! It's always cool when Zagat thinks you built one of the hottest spots in the United States! Big Sky was named one of the top ‘12 Hottest Rooftop Scenes in the US’ by ZAGAT! Not bad for a few guys who were building decks six years ago!!"
